The Shell Oil Company has issued a number of maps that cover
Botswana Game Reserves in detail. The Map is actually a conglomeration
of five different views of the reserve, each in varying detail.
The smallest map covers northern Botswana, from just south of
Maun to the northern border with Zimbabwe and Namibia. Another
area gives a more detailed view of Moremi Game Reserve. From this
view three prime game viewing areas of the reserve are shown in
much greater detail on separate sections of the map. Each segment
of road is marked both with the distance in kilometers and numerical
markings that serve as a "road reference". The map is also generously
littered with both pictures and text descriptions of the park,
which include the road reference number for easy identification.
There are 26 different pictures dotted around the map, each with
a letter designation that refers the visitor to interesting sites
throughout the park. In practice, the larger scale maps tend to
be more accurate than the sections that detail the small game
trails through the bush. Some of the convoluted trails wind through
areas of dense brush and even with the maps it is quite easy to
become momentarily lost. But, the map is still an invaluable tool
when traversing the thick marshlands of Moremi. On the reverse
side of the map are sections detailing the game reserve's regulations,
history, and general information. A majority of the reverse side
is dedicated to a comprehensive bird, mammal, trees, and habitats
checklist that will help the visitor identify the living organisms
within the reserve. If you are planning an independent trip into
Moremi Game Reserve, this map will be an invaluable resource within
the park and add significantly to your enjoyment of this stunningly
beautiful area.
