The Michelin map number 955 is simply one of the best road maps
of Africa. Map 955 covers the southern borders of Cameroon, Central
African Republic, the Sudan, and Ethiopia. The map then extends
south to Cape Town, including Madagascar, Mauritius, Comoros,
and Reunion Islands. Despite the huge area covered, the map is
incredibly accurate. It includes all major roadways and many minor
routes that, in reality, are often little more than dirt tracks.
It is easily possible to navigate your way across this portion
of Africa using only Michelin Map 955. All roads have distance
markers printed next to them, and while the minor roads are marked
only in kilometers, the major routes are marked in miles as well.
Many of the locations are written in their French names, but the
difference between the French and English is negligible and will
not be a hindrance to someone who does not understand French.
The map is huge, nearly 5ft/1.75m long when fully opened. It is
recommend that during high periods of usage you don't completely
unfurl the map, but rather hinge it open only to the section you
need. The paper the map is printed on is sturdy, however, it will
eventually begin to tear along the creased folds. Be aware that
the map does not have detailed cutouts of urban areas, so supplementary
maps will be required when you enter a city.
