Once again, a book that was absolutely murdered by a movie. Seven Years In Tibet documents the flight of Harrer, a German national, from the English in India during World War II. Harrer seeks sanctuary in the Himalayan Mountains of Tibet. After a grueling journey he enters the forbidden city of Lhasa and begins to tutor the Dalai Lama. The original manuscript for Seven Years In Tibet was written in German and later translated into English. As a result, the text is often brusque, the prose simple and ineloquent. However, the story is fascinating and Harrer offers the reader extraordinary insight into a fascinating culture that had rarely been visited by anyone from the western world. Harrer's time in Lhasa is interesting, however the strength of the book is his journey through the harsh remoteness of the Himalayas. Seven Years In Tibet is not an exceptional book but, despite being a struggle to read at times, is buoyed by a fascinating story.
