Africa Solo is a naively pleasant travelogue about the author's journey across the heart of Africa. Kertscher is remarkably generous with his internal fears and trepidations, openly admitting that his journey frightens him on many occasions. This is a refreshing departure from the legions of travelogues full of self-aggrandizing bravado. Kertscher journeys from North Africa across the Sahara into the Ivory Coast. He then flies to Bangui, C.A.R., crossing to Congo and continuing through the jungles to Kenya. Africa Solo is not a complicated book. It is a simple travelogue, documenting Kertcher's journey from start to finish. Kertscher doesn't explore the issues involved with life in Africa, but he does occasionally make interesting observations on the quirks of travelers. Africa Solo is a pleasant read, and while not spectacular or exciting, may just leave the reader with a warm fuzzy feeling. It is a pleasant read.
